Warning: your Google Chrome browser might be an imposter!
A report by security researchers MalwareBytes has identified a dangerous new form of Adware which masquerades as the Google Chrome Browser.
The Google Chrome copycat named ‘eFast Browser’ is a form of Adware which replicates the look and feel of Chrome to trick users into thinking they are using the official thing.
Upon installation, eFast attempts to delete Chrome, removing desktop and taskbar shortcuts and replacing them with its own, which look similar.
The copycat browser then undertakes malicious activities while you use it. These include generating annoying pop-up ads, redirecting you to dangerous websites and placing unauthorised advertising onto websites you regularly visit. There are also concerns that it could be tracking data to be used in identity theft.
How is it installed?
Adware like eFast browser is typically installed on computers when a user downloads a free programme from the internet. When completing the installation process, they may decide to quickly speed through the options and by doing so unwittingly tick buttons which install the programme. To avoid doing this you should carefully read each step of the instructions when you install a programme and make sure that you click ‘Advanced’ or ‘Custom Settings’ if given the option. Often by doing this you will discover that unwanted software is being ‘bundled’ in with the programme you genuinely wanted to install.
How do I uninstall it?
The process of uninstalling eFast is quite complicated and involves a series of steps. MalwareTips has compiled them into a guide you can view here.
